Braille Transcriber

At home or On-Site

Last updated on January 12, 2012

Description:

Enjoy the challenge of transcribing materials into Braille for children and adults with print disabilities. With your help, children and adults can read.

Transcribe a variety of print materials in Braille such as textbooks, computer manuals, cookbooks, library books and other educational material. Transcribe in Braille short-term requests such as newsletters, children's books, menus, and playbills. It's a perfect opportunity for retirees or persons with time to volunteer at home.

Requirements:

Time Commitment:

This is an ongoing and long-term commitment. We ask a minimum of 8 hours per week, ongoing, with more time required during training.

Training:

Training will be provided, free of charge. Volunteers for this position must participate in, and successfully complete, an on-line computer Braille course (daytime or evening). An 8-10 hour per week commitment for study and completion of homework assignments is necessary. Certification by The Library of Congress is required after training is completed. A transcriber commitment to ABLE after certification is an expectation.

Location:

At Home, or at our office in the Central Library Building in downtown Milwaukee.
